The S-Class designed and built by Mercedes-Benz between 1991 and 1998 was a flagship model of the marque based on a chassis known as the W140. Initially the two different wheelbases were known as either SE or SEL but were changed in June 1993 to simply S regardless of body style or engine type.

Development of the S Class began in 1981 with introduction scheduled for late 1989. BMW, however, through a spanner in the works for Mercedes-Benz by introducing their new 7-Series in 1986. BMW’s engine offerings included a V12 engine. For this reason, Mercedes-Benz delayed the introduction of the S Class so they could develop a V12 offering of their own. This development included adapting the engine bay to fit the huge engine as well as upgrading the braking system.

The S Class finally made its debut in March 1991 at the Geneva motor show. It was offered with a range of engines including 6, 8 and 12-cylinder variants. Other features included double glazed windows, parameter steering to improve low speed manoeuvrability, soft close doors, orthopaedic heated seats, and many more luxurious features to ensure that owners of the S Class knew they had attained the height of luxury which is true even by today’s standards. The W140 received a refresh in 1994 that went out of production in 1998.
