In 1984 Porsche replaced the 3.0L 911SC with the 3.2L Carrera, using the Carrera name for the first time since 1977.

A higher displacement motor was used in the new car. The volume was achieved with the same bore size as in the 3.0L engine, namely 95 mm but with 74.4mm stroke and combined with the camshafts from the 1978 3.3L Turbo. Higher domed pistons increased the compression ratio and a new inlet manifold and exhaust system were fitted. The 915 gearbox from the 911 SC was retained for the first models and only changed to G50 gearbox the in 1987 model. Engine power was now up to 172kW, or 231Hp. Zero to 100 km/h 5.4 seconds and the top speed was 240km/h.
