For Mercedes to compete with the 190 in the German Touring Car Championship the car had to be based on a roadgoing model. Mercedes fitted a detuned version of the Cosworth engine into a 190 and called it the 190E 2,3 16V. The car was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983.
The engine was based on the M102 4-cylinder engine. The 2,3L 16-valve engine generated 136kW at 6200 rpm. Top speed was around 230km/h and zero to 100km/h took less than 8 seconds.
